Matariki, Anniversary Days and Your Bank: A Quick New Zealand Guide
New Zealand has only a handful of public holidays, which is exactly why each one catches people out. Here is the short version I give friends who have just moved here.
The holidays that close branches
Bank branches generally close on national public holidays: New Year's Day and 2 January, Waitangi Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, ANZAC Day, the King's Birthday, Matariki, Labour Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Two rules are worth knowing:
- Mondayisation. If Waitangi Day or ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the holiday moves to the following Monday. Christmas, Boxing Day and the New Year holidays shift in a similar way.
- Matariki moves every year. It follows the Māori lunar calendar and is set in advance by law. It falls on Friday 10 July in 2026 and Friday 25 June in 2027.
Anniversary days are regional
Each region also has its own anniversary day, such as Wellington's in late January or Canterbury's in November. Branches in that region may close while the rest of the country carries on, and some payments may take an extra day. If you pay bills or wages across regions, check how your bank handles it.
What still works
- Internet and mobile banking for checking balances and paying bills
- Cards and contactless payments
- ATMs, although cash can run low on long weekends in holiday towns
My long-weekend checklist
- Pay rent and wages a day early if they fall on a holiday.
- Don't leave a large transfer until the Friday before Easter or Matariki.
- Book any in-branch appointment midweek.
- Check the regional anniversary day if you travel or employ staff in another region.
For a quick look ahead, I keep a page with New Zealand bank holiday dates including Matariki bookmarked. Then I check my own bank's notices for anything specific to my region.
Enjoy the long weekend. The bank will still be there on Tuesday.
